September 17, 1931 - June 6, 2005 - American actress.
Graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Lee Strasberg's Actors' Studio in New York, as well as the Directing Workshop for Women at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. In the early 1950s, she appeared in a number of television series under the name Anne Marneau, and in 1952 made her debut on the big screen in the film "You Can Enter Without Knocking" under the pseudonym Anne Bancroft.
After several small roles in films, the actress left Hollywood and returned to New York on the stage, where in 1958 she made her Broadway debut in the play "Two on a Swing" starring Henry Fonda. Bencroft's role in this production earned Bancroft a Tony Award, and two years later she was again honored with this award for her role in the play The Miracle Worker. In 1962, the play was filmed in Hollywood, where Anne Bankfort also starred, which was awarded an Academy Award and BAFTA. In the same year, she successfully performed on Broadway in the production of "Mother Courage and Her Children" based on the play by Bertolt Brecht.
In 1965, Bancroft won a Golden Globe, BAFTA and second Academy Award nomination for her role in the drama The Pumpkin Eater. Two years later, Anne Bancroft played one of her most famous movie roles - Mrs. Robinson in Mike Nichols' tragicomedy "The Graduate". The role of a married woman seducing a young university graduate, played by Dustin Hoffman, brought the actress a Golden Globe Award, as well as Oscar and BAFTA nominations. Despite this success, the actress later admitted in an interview that her role in this film overshadowed all her other film works and cemented her the status of an "old lady", although at the time of filming she was only 36 years old, and Hoffman was 30. Bancroft was subsequently nominated twice more for the Oscar: for the films "Turning Point" and "Agnes of God" .
In 1980, Anne Bancroft made her director and screenwriter debut in Fat Man, starring Dom DeLuise. In 1981, the actress was approved for the role of Joan Crawford in Dear Mom, but after several hours of filming she refused to act and was replaced by Faye Dunaway. Bancroft also turned down the role of Aurora Greenway in The Tongue of Tenderness, which eventually won five Oscars, in favor of To Be Or Not To Be, which was produced by her husband.
Mel Brooks was also a co-creator of The Elephant Man and 84 Charing Cross Road, in which Bancroft played one of the main roles, and in addition directed the comedy films Silent Movie and Dracula: Dead and Satisfied. in which his wife performed small roles.

From 1953 to 1957, Bancroft was married to Martin May. In this marriage, they had no children.
In 1961, at a rehearsal of the Perry Como variety show, Bancroft met director and producer Mel Brooks, whom she married three years later. They have also worked together on several films. In 1972, their only son, Maximilian, was born, who became a writer and screenwriter. In April 2005, Bancroft became a grandmother when her daughter-in-law Michelle gave birth to a baby boy, Henry Michael Brooks. Anne Bancroft died of uterine cancer in a New York hospital at the age of 73. Her death came as a surprise even to many of her friends, as they did not even suspect that the actress was terminally ill. Bancroft was buried in Kensiko Cemetery in Valhalla, New York, next to Mildred's mother (who died 5 years later) and father Michael. Ann Bancroft received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to television. The cartoon "Delgo" was dedicated to the memory of Bancroft.
