Norton was born in Boston, Massachusetts but raised in Columbia, Maryland. At the age of five, Edward became interested in theater, soon began studying at the Orenstein Columbia School of Performing Arts and at the age of eight made his stage debut in a local production. Norton graduated from Wild Lake High School in 1985, then Yale University in 1991 with a BA in history. At Yale, Norton was still in theater. He attended many faculties, although drama was never his major. Actor Ron Livingston was his fellow student and the same amateur actor. Edward also studied Japanese and attended the popular NOVA Group English school. Immediately after receiving his diploma, he went to Japan, where he worked for his grandfather's company Enterprise Foundation. And only a few years later, in 1994, having returned to New York, Edward decided to give up his usual work and devote himself entirely to his acting career. While working as a waiter, Norton played on several theater stages in New York and was eventually hired by the New York Signature Theater Company, of which he is currently a member of the board of directors. His film debut for Norton was the film "Primal Fear" (1996), where he played a young prisoner sociopath. For this role, he received a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Subsequently, he was repeatedly nominated, including for Best Actor for his role in the film about neo-Nazis "American History X", and for his participation in the film adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel "Fight Club" worldwide fame came to him.
Recently, he has played himself in the experimental comedy television series Stella. He also won critical acclaim for his role as the leper king in Kingdom of Heaven. In 2000, he made his directorial debut with the comedy Keeping the Faith. His performance in the 2006 film The Illusionist once again earned positive reviews from critics. In 2008, Edward played Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, which received almost exclusively critical acclaim. Norton was offered a return to his role in The Avengers, but he canceled the contract and was replaced by Mark Ruffalo. He had a close relationship with actresses Salma Hayek, Drew Barrymore and Courtney Love, with whom he toured as a session guitarist in her band Hole.
