September 30, 1882 - October 2, 1956 - American actor.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1882. After graduating from the US Naval Academy, he did not pursue a career in the navy, but began performing in revues with musical and dance numbers. In 1921, Bankfort made his film debut, where he achieved great success and recognition in a short time. In the 1920s, he was remembered for his roles in The Runaway (1926), Old Battleships (1926), Underground (1927), New York Docks (1928), Evil Networks (1928) and "Stormbreaker" (1929), for the role of Jim Lang in which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. Due to the inability to adapt to the requirements of talkie films, the actor moved to supporting roles by the mid-1930s, although sometimes he continued to appear in major roles in such films as "Mr. Deeds Moves to the City" (1936), "Angels with Dirty Faces" (1938), Stagecoach (1939) and Every Morning I Die (1939). In 1942, John Bankfort ended his acting career and, after leaving Hollywood, moved to a ranch in Southern California, where he spent the rest of the years with his wife, actress Octavia Brosk. The actor died in Santa Monica in October 1956 at the age of 74.
