Born in Millvale, Pennsylvania. She trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and made her Broadway debut in 1944. In 1956, she received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the play "In the middle of the night." In total, the actress has appeared in over thirty different Broadway productions throughout her career. On the big screen, Anne Jackson has appeared in films such as So Young, So Bad, The Journey and Big Story. She played the leading female roles in the films "Tiger Coming Out" and "The Secret Life of the American Wife." She also had notable roles in Lovers and Other Strangers, The Shining, A Woman Called Golda and Ancestors. On television, she appeared in dozens of TV series, ranging from "Childbirth" and ending with "Ambulance". In 1967 she was nominated for an Emmy for her role in the television movie Dear Friends .
On March 5, 1948, Anne Jackson married actor Eli Wallach (1915-2014). They had three children. She survived her spouse for two years: she died on April 12, 2016 at the age of 90 in her home in Manhattan.
