Karn was born Richard Karn Wilson in Seattle, Washington. Karn's father, Jeanne, was Seeby, who served in World War II. Richard graduated from Roosevelt High School and Washington State University, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Karn also gained dramatic experience in Scotland at the Edinburgh Festival.

After completing his drama degree in 1979, Karn moved to New York. After less than one week, he was hired to do an advertisement for Michelob Beer, which aired during the 1980 Super Bowl. When he joined the Screen Actors Guild, he was informed that Richard Wilson was already there, so he dropped his last name.

In 1989, his wife Tudi convinced him that they should move to Los Angeles. He found a place for them to live under the management of the apartment complex, and catered events in the Jewish synagogue on the side. After receiving the traffic citation, Karn attended a traffic school and sat down next to an agent who told him about the casting of a new television show called Home Improvement. The role of Al Borland had already been given to Tobolowski, but when the taping was scheduled, Tobolowski was busy with another film and the role had to be reworked. Karn was a guest star on the pilot episode, but became a regular cast member when the show was picked up by the network.

In 2002, Carne replaced Louis Anderson as the fourth militia game show Family Feud. Karn left Family Feud in 2006 and was replaced by John O'Hurley.

In 2002, Karn also appeared in The Strokes in a music video for "Someday," which featured strip segments at a fictional show of Family Feud versus Guided Voices.
On October 6, 2008, Karn replaced Patrick Duffy as the host of Game Show Network's Bingo of America. Karn was also a replacement host for PSG Radio.

In 2015, Karn hosted an informational Do-It-Yourself television program called "You Karn Fix It Yourself". The exhibition focuses primarily on simple household tasks and home improvement projects. The show ran 6 episodes on truTV during the fall season.

In April 2016 it was announced that "You Karn Fix It Yourself" will not be resumed for a second season.
