July 15, 1893 - December 9, 1972 - German and American film director and actor who spent most of his career in Hollywood.
"Although unfortunately not as well known as some of his German and European compatriots in Hollywood, he had an outstanding artistic style and worked with dedication to create some of the treasures of Hollywood and world cinema."
Dieterle's most interesting and recognized films today include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941) and Portrait of Jenny (1948). His film "The Life of Emile Zola" (1937) won an Oscar as best film, and Dieterle himself was nominated for an Oscar as best director for this film. In addition, a total of five actors have been nominated for Academy Awards for their roles in Dieterle's films - Paul Mooney, Joseph Shildkraut, Brian Ahern, Walter Huston and Jennifer Jones, with Mooney and Shieldkraut winning it.
