April 17, 1918 - July 4, 1993 - American actress, Oscar nominee in 1937.
She was born in New York and began her acting career at the age of five. In the early stages of her career, she was also known as Dawn O'Day. In 1934, after her role as Ann Shirley in the movie Anne of Green Gables, she adopted the pseudonym for her character. In 1937, Anne Shirley was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Stella Dallas. Later, she starred in the films Continuous Vigil at Night (1940), The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941), Bombardier (1943) and a number of other films. The last film with her participation was the 1944 noir "It's Murder, My Darling", after which she quit filming. Anne Shirley's first husband was actor John Payne (1937-1943), from whom she gave birth to a daughter, Julie Payne, who later also became an actress. Her second husband was Adrian Scott, whose marriage lasted from 1945 to 1948. The third and last husband of the actress was Marion Davis' nephew Charles Lederer. Their marriage lasted from 1946 until his death in 1976.
Ann Shirley died in 1993 of lung cancer in New York at the age of 75. For her contribution to the development of the film industry, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
