December 21, 1940 - December 4, 1993 - American composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, experimental musician, and sound and film director. In over thirty years of career, he has covered genres such as rock, jazz, academic and concrete music. Released over 60 studio albums, which he recorded both with his group The Mothers of Invention and solo. Self-taught musician. As a teenager, he was fond of rhythm and blues, as well as the work of the avant-garde performer Edgar Varez. While in high school, he began composing symphonic works and played drums in a rhythm and blues group, in which he later switched to electric guitar. A mixture of diverse musical genres led him to create music that often could not be attributed to any one style. His debut album Freak Out! 1966 was a mix of rock 'n' roll songs with various improvisations and studio sound effects. His subsequent albums also shared this eclectic and experimental approach, regardless of whether the main genre was rock, jazz, or classical music. In the satirical lyrics of his songs, he sharply criticized general education and religion, at the same time, he defended freedom of speech, promoted self-education and participation in political life, and opposed censorship. Several of Zappa's albums have had commercial success, especially in Europe, which has allowed him to operate independently of record labels for most of his career. Zappa's work has found a wide response from music critics and has had a noticeable impact on the work of many important composers and performers. Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and his career was honored in 1997 with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
In addition to his musical activities, he has also produced several feature films. He was married twice, his marriage to Catherine Jay Sherman lasted from 1960 to 1964, the second time he married in 1967 to Adelaide Gail Sloatman (eng.Gail Zappa), with whom he lived until his death from prostate cancer in 1993. Zappa has four children: Moon, Dweezil Zappa, Ahmet Zappa and Diva. Widow Gail Zappa is the manager of the Zappa Family Trust.
