His father became Dean of the Conservatory at Highland Park College and when Nigel was three, the family moved to Des Moines. After graduating from Highland Park College, Nigel moved to California to pursue a career in the relatively young film industry. His first film was an adaptation of Louise May Alcott's classic novel Little Women (1918), which quickly gained public attention. In 1927, Nigel co-starred with Lon Cheney, Marceline Day, Henry Wolthhall and Polly Moran in Tod Browning's lost horror film London After Midnight .

On May 11, 1927, Nigel was among 35 other founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, later becoming president of the organization (1932-1933). He was also one of the founders of the Screen Actors Guild of the USA. Nigel was the host of the 3rd Academy Awards, held November 5, 1930, and the 5th Awards (November 18, 1932). On March 19, 1953, he co-hosted with Bob Hope at the 25th ceremony. Nigel married three times. His first wife, Ruth Helms, gave birth to a daughter, Ruth Margaret, in 1920. His second wife was actress Lynn Merrick. Third wife, Michael Coulson Smith, gave birth to his son Michael in the late 1950s. Nigel died on February 24, 1970 in New York, aged 72, and was cremated in North Bergen, New Jersey. Buried in a Lutheran cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois.
