February 4, 1895 - October 8, 1953 - English actor.
Nigel was educated at Grange, Stevenge, and Abingdon School, Berkshire. From 1914 he served in France as a lieutenant, but was seriously wounded (simultaneously with eleven bullets) in the left leg) in Cambrai, and spent most of the war in a wheelchair. On May 12, 1920 he made his debut on the stage of the Comedy Theater. In October of the same year, he went to Canada. Eight years later, he also began working in the cinema. In 1934 he moved to Hollywood.
During his career as a film actor, Bruce has worked in 78 films. He starred in Alfred Hitchcock's films Rebecca and Suspicion. In the film "Son of Lassie" played the grandfather of young Elizabeth Taylor.
But the main role of Nigel Bruce is the role of Dr. Watson in a series of films dedicated to the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. His friend Rathbone starred in the role of Holmes. Although Watson has often appeared in the films of the series as the eldest of the two main characters, Bruce is actually three years younger than Rathbone. His interpretation of the image of Watson has a more comic connotation and is not always perceived positively by fans of Conan Doyle. He has been married to English actress Violet Campbell since 1921. Had two children.
Died at 58 of a heart attack. Neither Nigel Bruce nor Basil Rathbone ever accepted US citizenship, remaining British citizens.
