Nigel Hawthorne - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Actor, Producer.
April 5, 1929, Coventry, UK - December 26, 2001 - British actor and producer.
Due to his strict upbringing and harsh treatment at school, he grew up insecure and withdrawn child. Hawthorne's dad considered acting "not masculine enough" and wanted his son to become a diplomat.
But after playing a theater production in Cape Town, Nigel decided that he should pursue a career on the British stage, and at 22 he went to England with 12 pounds in his pocket. His first attempt was a failure. Hawthorne was almost never invited to play, and after 19 months without a job, he was forced to return to South Africa. In 1963, he again decided to try his luck in Britain, and this time he was more fortunate. He has appeared in theater and television programs and has earned a reputation as a good character actor. In 1977, writers Anthony Jay and Jonathan Lynn spotted Hawthorne in one of his theatrical roles and were invited to play Sir Humphrey Appleby in the political comedy television series Yes, Mr. Minister! Gruvemuvestart Hawthorne was forced to take medication to overcome his nervousness on set. Nevertheless, his role as a cunning civil servant, combining courtesy and servility with the pursuit of personal interests, earned him four awards from the British Academy of Film and Performing Arts (BAFTA) and nationwide popularity. He received two more of these awards for his roles in the television serial Fragile Heart and the film The Madness of King George. Interestingly, the actor was the only candidate for the lead role in "The Madness of King George" - by that time he had already received an award for playing the role of the mad king on the stage. Hawthorne was also nominated for an Oscar for this film.
At the peak of the popularity of the series "Yes, Mr. Minister!" then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher invited Hawthorne to tea at the Downing Street residence and decided to take part in the filming too.
