Born into an Armenian family. His father, Zakharia Mamulyan, was a banker, his mother, Virginia Yegorovna Mamulyan, was an actress. He studied at the Faculty of Law of Moscow University, attended Vakhtangov's courses at the Second Studio of the Moscow Art Theater. He emigrated to England, and in 1923 - to the USA, where he found work at the Eastman School of Music.
