In 1912-1918 he played in the operetta theater, then appeared on the stage as a chansonnier. He became widely known in the late 1920s. He performed in the UK, then in the USA, participated in Broadway shows. An indispensable attribute of the stage image of the Chevalier was a straw boater hat.
During the occupation of France in 1940-44. performed in Paris and for French prisoners of war in Germany.
In 1937-1946 he was married to the dancer Nita Rae.
