May 10, 1890, Clinton - August 17, 1987, Santa Monica - American film director and producer, winner of the Mussolini Cup at the Venice Film Festival (1935), BAFTA Award in the United Nations Award (1951) and named star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame "(1960). Gruvemuvestart Best known for directing the films Flesh and the Devil (1926), Anna Christie (1930), Anna Karenina (1935), Wife Against the Secretary (1936) and They Met in Bombay (1941), in most of which featured Clarence Brown's favorite actors, Greta Garbo and Clark Gable; it was Brown who discovered Garbo's talent. Brown is a six-time Oscar nominee and the only filmmaker in the world with so many nominations to have never received a single statuette. Brown's style seemed deceptively simple, but the ease was the result of tremendous care. As a director, Brown was concerned not only with acting, but lighting, editing, storytelling - every detail of the film making process. The situations of his films, in which he achieved a strong naturalism, were always convincing. According to Brown himself, he owed all this to the filmmaker Maurice Tourneur, who paved the way for him in cinema.
