He began his career in vaudeville, and in 1935 made his film debut, becoming by the end of the decade one of the leading actors in Hollywood. His early work included One in a Million (1936), In Old Chicago (1937), The Three Musketeers (1939) and The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (1939). A big break for him was also his role in the Oscar-nominated film Heaven Can Wait in 1943.
The roles of Amichi in the movie were so varied and real that comedian Fred Allen once even joked, "Don Amichi will soon play Don Amici himself," which he actually did shortly after appearing in the movie "It's in the Suitcase!" (1945). Don Amichi has also successfully appeared on radio, played several notable roles on Broadway, and was a frequent guest on various television shows.
In 1983, Amichi, along with another veteran of American cinema, Ralph Bellamy, successfully returned to the big screen as one of the Duke brothers in the movie Trade Places. Later he continued his film career, appearing in the films "Cocoon" (1985), for his role in which he was awarded an Oscar, "Harry and the Hendersons" (1987), "A Trip to America" ??(1988), "Cocoon 2: Return "(1988) and" Oscar "(1991). His most recent film roles were as the voice of Shadow the dog in The Way Home: An Incredible Journey (1993) and as Harry's grandfather in Corrina, Corrina (1994).
