November 21, 1912 - February 11, 1982 - American actress and dancer of the 1930s-1940s, famous for her dance numbers. She started dancing at the age of six, and as a teenager she moved to Atlantic City, where she began performing in nightclubs. In 1928, Paulell moved to New York, where she began to study tap dancing, and soon made her Broadway debut. In the mid-1930s, she signed with MGM and made her big screen debut in the 1935 George White Scandals. In the years that followed, Powell became a leading star in MGM musicals, appearing in films such as Broadway Melody 1936 (1935), Born to Dance (1936), Broadway Melody 1938 (1937), Rosalie (1937 ), Honolulu (1939), The 1940 Broadway Melody (1940), Lady Be Better (1941), On a Ship (1942), and 1945 Sensations (1944). Elinor Powell became known for her powerful, and sometimes aggressive, style of tap dancing. After her marriage to Glenn Ford in 1943, the actress almost stopped acting. In 1953, Powell appeared on television as the TV presenter of the religious program Faith of Our Children. After her divorce in 1959, she resumed her dance career, performing successfully over the next several years in music revues in New York and Las Vegas. Eleanor Powell died of cancer in 1982 at the age of 69 and was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the US film industry.
