Born in Vienna into the family of theatrical actor Rudolf Schildkraut. In the early 1900s, he moved to the United States, where he made a career on Broadway, appearing in a number of successful productions, the most notable of which was Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. In 1915, the actor made his debut on the big screen, starring in the next fifteen years in two dozen silent films, including "Orphans of the Storm" (1922) by D. W. Griffith and "King of Kings" by Cecil B. DeMille, where Schildkraut played Judas Iscariot .
With the beginning of the talkie era, Joseph Shildkraut successfully continued to appear on the big screen, and was one of the contenders for the role of Dracula. In 1937, he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Life of Emile Zola. Of the subsequent roles, the most notable were his appearances in the films Marie Antoinette (1938) with Norma Shearer in the title role, and The Man in the Iron Mask (1939). In 1959, Shildkraut was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank .
In the early 1950s, the actor began to appear regularly on television, where in 1963 he was nominated for an Emmy for his role in the television drama "Sam Benedict" .
Joseph Schildkraut was married three times. He divorced his first wife in 1930, the second died in 1962, and with the third he lived less than a year after the wedding, having died in January 1964 from a heart attack. For his contribution to the film industry, the actor was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
