Born May 27, 1936, Brooklyn, USA - American actor.
He played his first role in the school play "You Can't Take It With You," after a leg injury prevented him from playing basketball.
In 1953, at the age of 19, he was selected from among 200 actors for a role on the Broadway show Take the Big Step. The production was a great success and entered the top ten shows of the year, and Gossett received the prize for the best debut of the year. After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1954, he entered New York University. Due to his tall height (193 cm), he received an offer from the university basketball team, but decided to devote himself entirely to the theater. Gossett made his film debut in Raisins in the Sun (1961) directed by Sidney Poitier. In 1982, Louis Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in An Officer and a Gentleman, opposite Richard Gere. Since then, Gossett has starred in a wide variety of feature films, becoming one of America's leading black actors. Among his most famous films are "The Abyss" (1977), "My Enemy" (1985, nominated for the Saturn Prize), "Walking in Fire" (1986), "Iron Eagle -1,2,3,4", "The Punisher" (1989), Jaws 3 (1983, Golden Raspberry Award nominated). Broadway roles include Raisins in the Sun (1959), Golden Boy (1964), and Chicago (2002) .
Gossett has also successfully appeared on television. In 1977 he won an Emmy Award for his role in the television series Roots, which attracted the attention of the audience. In 1983, he starred in the TV movie Sadat about the life and death of Anwar Sadat, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Gossett also appeared in episodes of the series "Tomorrow Comes Today", "The Dead Zone", "Stargate SG-1" .
Gossett's voice can be heard in both cartoons (Delgo, Family Guy) and video games (Half-Life 2, 2004 - Vortigaunt) .
The actor is involved in charitable activities, in particular, supports the organization "Boys and Girls Clubs of America".
