Rex was the third child in the family and grew up on the ranch, along with his sister and brother. In August 1969, his parents moved to Oklahoma, where his father began to practice law. There, Rex attended Heritage Hall School, and then Casady School, an independent school under the auspices of the Episcopal Church, and in his free time worked part-time at the city zoo. In November 1975, after seeing Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rex announced that he was going to become an actor. However, after performing a dance act in his first school play, Fiddler on the Roof, Rex nearly destroyed the set, the school theater director asked Rex to leave the play and channel the energy in a different direction in the future. This marked the end of Rex's high school acting career. After graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1980 with a BA in Radio, Television and Film, Rex began his banking career, reaching the position of Vice President of Lending at Lakeshore Bank, which he held until July 5, 1982, when the bank was declared insolvent. Left without a job, Rex decided to return to the idea of ??becoming an actor and was able to convince the booking agent to give him a chance to try for some role.
