Foreman studied in Podebrady at a boarding school in Podebrady Castle together with the future first president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel and the Mashinov brothers. He gained worldwide fame after the film "Black Peter" (1963), which received the main prize of the Locarno Film Festival. The caustic satirical film Firefighters' Ball (It's Burning, My Lady, 1967) largely anticipated the mood of the Prague Spring. After the introduction of Soviet troops into Czechoslovakia, in 1968, he emigrated to the United States.
The first films of the American period were Breakaway (1971; Grand Prix of the Cannes Film Festival) and Hair (1979).
One One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), a parable about the conflict between personality and a repressive society, has collected all 5 major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Directing, Best Screenplay, and Two Actor.
