Born April 24, 1982, Fort Worth, Texas, USA is an American singer, actress, and composer.

She is the third and youngest child of Jeanne Ann Rose, a teacher and Irish descent, and Stephen Michael Clarkson, a former Canadian engineer with a Welsh descent.

Kelly has a brother, Jason, and a sister, Alyssa. When Kelly was six years old, her parents divorced after seventeen years of marriage. The brother left with his father, the sister began to live with her aunt, and Kelly remained with her mother. They were constantly moving from place to place throughout Texas, the mother worked in various jobs to support the family. As a six-year-old child, Kelly did not understand why the family was moving all the time. The family eventually settled in Burleson, where Kelly's mother remarried to Jimmy Taylor.

Clarkson attended Pauline Hughes Middle School. At first she wanted to become a marine biologist, but one day the teacher heard her singing in the hallway and asked her to audition for the school choir. Kelly told the instructor that she had never studied professional vocals before. After graduating from high school, she attended Burleson High School and began acting in musicals such as Brigadoon.

After graduating from high school, in 2000, Kelly took several jobs to pay for a demo that she hoped to send out to record companies. She received few responses and eventually decided to move to Hollywood to seek other opportunities to break onto the stage, one of which was the patronage of songwriter Derry Goffin. However, Goffin fell ill and was dying.

After six months in Hollywood, when her apartment burned to the ground, Kelly returned to her native Texas, where she played in the theater, worked as a bartender, sang at Six Flags amusement park and advertised the Red Bull drink.

In 2002, Clarkson won the American Idol music show. In the final of the competition, the singer performed "A Moment Like This", which was later included in her debut album, "Thankful". The single "A Moment Like This" was released in October 2002 and almost immediately set a record in the US Billboard Hot 100, moving up from 52nd place to 1 st. In the first week after the release of the song, more than 236,000 copies of the single were sold.

In December 2003, the singer took second place in the World Idol competition, in which all the winners of the American Idol show took part, losing to the Norwegian Kurt Nielsen.
