Born January 12, 1985, Los Angeles, California, USA - American actress, screenwriter, producer and director.
Her father, Dr. Abdoulaye Diop, is a pediatrician from Senegal, and her mother, Delina Hayward-Diop, is a teacher from Louisiana. Ray has four brothers and sisters. As a child, she lived with her family for some time in Dakar, Senegal. Her father runs his own medical practice in Inglewood, California.
Ray grew up in Potomac, Maryland, and in sixth grade with her family moved to View Park-Windsor Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles. She graduated from King and Drew High School of Medicine and Science, where she studied acting. Her parents divorced when she was in high school.
Ray graduated from Stanford University in 2007 with a degree in African and African American Studies. As a student, she filmed music videos, wrote and directed plays, and created the Dorm Diaries reality show for fun. While studying at Stanford, Ray met Tracy Oliver, who later helped with the production of Clumsy Black Girl and also performed on the series.
After college, Ray received a theater scholarship to the Public Theater in New York. Oliver and Ray began taking lessons together at the New York Film Academy. Ray worked odd jobs while deciding whether to go to business school or law school, but ultimately gave up on both ideas and began work on Awkward Black Girl.
She soon moved to television with the HBO television series White Crow. For her performance on the show, Ray received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical, and an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
