Bob started playing the piano at the age of 4. His first piano teacher was his sister Mary Elizabeth, who taught Bob at Mercy Academy and the local Catholic School in Marshall. She quickly discovered that he had an "excellent growth rate." At the age of 7, Bob began studying with Mrs. RT Dufford, a teacher at Missouri Valley College. Bob rates her as `` an excellent teacher who also teaches the basics of theory and harmony. '' His first professional musical job was when he was about 8 years old. He played tap dance at the Mercy Academy. At the age of 15, Bob continued his studies with Franklin Launer, a teacher from Christian College in Columbia. Bob received a lot of music practice during his high school years from Harold
Lickey. Around 1950-1956, Bob was scheduled to perform at the Missouri State Fair in Missouri. Bean
remembers that during the summer of 1955, Bob played a dance at Lake Ozarks. In his spare time, Bob tried water skiing and he recalls that `` during the day we had free time and I became an expert water skiing skier this summer! '' At the age of 16, the commitment to music service for the beach goers continued into summer 1956, when Bob was traveling with good friend Ben Swinger in Colorado, and the trip ended with work at the Piano Bar at the Steads Ranch at the resort. In 1957, Bob attended the University of Michigan and began his journey towards his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music.
