Sam Wanamaker (Samuel Watenmaker) was born on June 14, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was a tailor who had Ukrainian-Jewish roots.
Sam graduated from the School of Dramatic Art at the Goodman Theater. In the same theater, the boy made his stage debut at the age of 17. After graduating from high school, Sam was enrolled at Drake University in Iowa. The young actor combined his studies and work in a theater troupe, with which he participated in Broadway productions, and also toured America.
