Sam Wanamaker (Samuel Watenmaker) was born on June 14, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was a tailor who had Ukrainian-Jewish roots.

Sam graduated from the School of Dramatic Art at the Goodman Theater. In the same theater, the boy made his stage debut at the age of 17. After graduating from high school, Sam was enrolled at Drake University in Iowa. The young actor combined his studies and work in a theater troupe, with which he participated in Broadway productions, and also toured America. In addition, Sam was part of a theater company called the Peninsula Players Theater, which his brother Richard and sister Caroline founded.

In 1942, Wanamaker made his first appearance on the Broadway stage with the Crown Cafe, and in 1947 he made his debut as the director of The Gentleman of Athens.

In 1943, Sam participated in the production of Counterattack. After this performance, the actor became a supporter of communism and joined the US Communist Party. In the period from 1943 to 1946, the artist served in the army.

In 1947, the actor left the ranks of the Communist Party. In the same year, the government began to draw up lists of people who were suspected of loving communism. Despite the fact that Wanamaker served in the army for 3 years, he was still listed on one of the lists.

Samuel Wanamaker died at the age of 74 from cancer.
