Richard Attenborough was born on August 29, 1923 in Cambridge, England. His father Frederick (whom he calls governor) ran first one, then another college in Cambridge. Mother was the founder of the Community Council on Marriage. Both were actively involved in political life. During the Spanish Civil War, the mother was among the organizers of public speeches, protested against Franco and took care of fifty Basque children. In the summer of 1939, the family adopted two Jewish children - Irene and Helga.
