Born August 27, 1961, Chicago, Illinois is an American film director and producer.

He attended Northwestern University where he earned a BA in English Literature. He also produced two animated films that won the Richard Grant Organization Awards.

After graduation, Jones worked as a freelance director and freelance animator for two years. He began mastering the basics of computer animation in 1985 (then the latest technology) at Post Effects in Chicago. In 1988 Johnson joined the creative team at Pacific Data Images, and two years later (in the early 1990s) he co-founded the Character Animation Group. In parallel, Tim was engaged in advertising activities for the Pillsbury Doughboy company, where he also acted as a director.

In 1995, Johnson directed the CGI for an episode (Treehouse of Horror VI) in the seventh season of the popular American animated television series The Simpsons, for which he was awarded the Grand Prize.

During his creative career, Tim Johnson has directed several full-length animated films. He made his directorial debut in 1998, when his adventure cartoon Antz Antz premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September in Canada. The tape was co-directed by his colleague, director and screenwriter (creator of another no less famous cartoon "Madagascar") Eric Darnell. Famous actors such as Woody Allen, Jennifer Lopez, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Christopher Walken and Sylvester Stallone (who agreed to work even without a fee) were invited to voice the roles. For their work, the creators were awarded the "Annie" prize.

In the early 2000s, Tim, together with Patrick Gilmour, directed the family adventure cartoon "Sinbad: The Legend of the Seven Seas", which was released in 2003. The main characters of the exciting story this time spoke with the voices of Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Three years later (in 2006) Johnson, in collaboration with director Carey Kirkpatrick, completed work on the comic cartoon "The Woodsmen" based on the plot of the comics of the same name by T. Lewis and Michael Fry. Bruce Willis, Nick Nolte, Avril Lavigne, Catherine O'Hara and many other actors took part in the scoring of the picture. In April 2006, the tape was shown at the Indianapolis Film Festival. "The Lesnaya Bratva" was a success with connoisseurs of cinema, big and small, as well as with professional critics, who awarded her the Annie Prize, and this picture also won the Audience Award.

In early 2010, Johnson, collaborating with DreamWorks Animation, continued directing with the 21-minute short film Kung Fu Panda: Holiday Edition and at the same time took up another project, the feature-length cartoon How to Train Your Dragon, in which he appeared in as an executive producer. This tape was a huge success with viewers in different countries, took part in numerous festivals and was nominated for an Oscar, and it also grossed half a billion dollars at the box office.

In 2015, Tim Johnson presented to the audience his next full-length cartoon, created by him using the 3D "House" technology. The plot of the film is based on the book "The True Meaning of Smekday" by the contemporary American children's writer Adam Rex. The world premiere of the film took place on March 27, 2015.
