Project Three Fish was organized by Tribe After Tribe frontman Robbie Robb and Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament. The two musicians loved each other's creativity, and after a joint tour of Pearl Jam and Tribe After Tribe in 1993, their friendship led to the creation of the Three Fish project. The project also includes ex-Fastbacks drummer Richard Stuverud. In 1996, the project's self-titled album was released. On this album, the "honorable fourth fish" was Cary Ecklund, who played keyboards. The debut album received good reviews from music critics. Three years later, the band released their second album, The Quiet Table.
