Director, screenwriter, actor. People's Artist of the USSR (1950).
He studied at the law faculty of St. Petersburg University, at the drama department of the theater school at the Alexandrinsky Theater. He graduated from the Odessa school of warrant officers, served in the army. In 1917 he was an actor in the "Winter Forest Theater" in Petrograd. In 1918 he worked in the troupe of the famous theater director Gordon Craig in England, in 1920 he returned to Russia. In 1925 he graduated from N. Morozov's film courses in Leningrad. Since 1943 - director of the Mosfilm film studio .
He made his debut in 1928 with the children's film Joy and Friend, with which he began a whole series of children's films. But the film adaptation of the play by A.N. Ostrovsky's "Thunderstorm". This work put him in the forefront of domestic directors. The film was marked by a masterful work with an acting ensemble of major theatrical masters: A.K. Tarasova, V.O. Massalitinova, M.I. Zharov, M.M. Tarkhanov, M.I. Tsarev). Addiction to Russian classics manifested itself in the future work of the director. He is the author of the famous film adaptations included in the golden fund of Russian cinema: "Guilty Without Guilt" by Ostrovsky, "The Inspector General" by Gogol, "Duel" by Kuprin, "On the Eve" by Turgenev.
The pinnacle of Petrov's work is the historical two-part film "Peter I", which was awarded the highest prize at the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris. The director managed to create a whole gallery of historical portraits, to reveal the diversity of human characters. Actor's works are brilliant: Petra was played by N.K. Simonov, Menshikova - M.I. Zharov, Ekaterina - A.K. Tarasova. The tense atmosphere of the era of Peter, recreated by the director, captured the viewer, made him a participant in all the vicissitudes of his rapid and eventful life. The battle scenes of Peter the Great's time were shot on a large scale and expressively.
