Born in St. Petersburg on April 12, 1904. He received his theatrical education in the 1920s at the Free Studio of E.P. Karpov and at the School of Russian Drama (graduated in 1924). In 1924-1928 he was an actor in the Studio Theater at the Leningrad Academic Drama Theater. In 1928-1936 and from 1953 until his death he was in the troupe of the theater. Pushkin. In the 1930-1940s he played in theaters: them. Lenin Komsomol, Red Banner Baltic Fleet, Leningrad Drama Theater (then named after Komissarzhevskaya). In 1937 he was an actor of the Rostov Drama Theater.
Chestnokov was a recognized performer of the role of Lenin in many productions of that time. His brother Semyon was a puppet theater artist, married to actress Glyceria Bogdanova-Chesnokova. He died on May 15, 1968 in Leningrad. The actor was buried in the Literatorskie Mostki necropolis.
