Studied at the Institute of Civil Engineers (1918-1920),
attended the workshop of V.E. Meyerhold (1918).
He graduated from directing courses at the theatrical department of the People's Commissariat for Education in Petrograd (1920).
In 1919-1924 he was an actor of the Bolshoi Drama Theater, director and actor of the Free Comedy Theater in Petrograd.
Since 1925 - director of the Sevzapkino film studio (later - Lenfilm).
The author of theoretical works on cinema.
He was buried at the Serafimovskoye cemetery in Leningrad, next to his wife, actress Lyudmila Glazova.
