Christian Berkel was born in 1957 in Berlin. From the age of fourteen, he lived in Paris, where he was taught dramatic art by Pierre Bertin and Jean-Louis Barrot. Then he entered the Berlin Film and Television Academy. Later, the actor began to appear on the stage of theaters in Augsburg, Munich, Vienna and Berlin.
Christian Berkel began to receive his first notable movie roles at the age of nineteen. In 1977, three films with his participation were released at once: Inspector Kress, The War of Women, and the Serpent's Egg by the outstanding director Ingmar Bergman. Christian Berkel first played the main roles in the short films New Years Eve - Dialogue and Wind from the Southeast. At the same time, the actor did not leave the theater either. In 1998, he periodically appeared on famous German stages: theaters in Augsburg, Dusseldorf, Bochum Theater, Burgtheater, Theater Berlin.
But the real success came to Berkel in 2004 with his participation in the film Bunker, which received international recognition and was nominated for an Oscar. In this film about the last days of the Third Reich, Christian played the role of the doctor Ernst-Gunther Schenk, whose worldview in the film is opposed to the spiritual degradation of the main characters.
Subsequent films with Christian Berkel gained no less fame: the Black Book of the famous director Paul Verhoeven and Leningrad, in which the actor played one of the Nazis. After these pictures, Berkel again received an offer from Hollywood. In the film Operation Valkyrie, the actor got the role of one of the most controversial characters in his filmography - the fascist leader Mertz von Quirnheim.
At the moment, the actor is working on roles in several films: Agents A.N.K.L., She, Trumbo and Antisocial. The release of each of these pictures is scheduled for 2015.
Now the actor lives with actress Andrea Sawatzki and has two sons.
