Born September 19, 1968 in Oaxaca (Mexico), the son of cabaret singer Anita Sanchez (Mixtec Indian) and Alain Downs, professor of cinematography from Minnesota. She grew up in Oaxaca, California and later lived in Minnesota, where she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in vocal arts and anthropology.
Her music contains motives of cumbia (Colombian traditional dance motives with elements of rock), rap poetry, beat movement, and even the squeak of an iguana.
