In 1986, at the age of 17, Strayd graduated from McGregor High School in McGregor, Minnesota, where she trained in athletics and cheerleading. The fictional Coltrap County in Torch is based on her memories of McGregor and Aitkin County. Cheryl went to St. Thomas in Saint Paul, but in her sophomore year she transferred to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts. In March 1991 her mother, Bobby Lambrecht, died of lung cancer at the age of 45. Strayd has described her death in each of her books and several essays.

In 2010, Strayd began writing Dear Sugar, a tip column for the literary site The Rumpus. In July 2012, a column was published by Vintage Books under the title "Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar". The book debuted at No. 5 on the New York Times Bestseller List for Self-Improvement Editions, and has also been published in other countries.
