He studied at the ten-year music school at the Tbilisi Conservatory (piano), at the Tbilisi Music School (composition class of Professor Shalva Mshvelidze). At the insistence of his mother, he entered the Yerevan Conservatory, where he studied for a year and a half. During this time, he studied the Armenian language and spoke it well. From 1953 to 1957 he studied at the Gnesins Moscow Music and Pedagogical Institute (composition class of A. I. Khachaturian), and the composer made his debut in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, where his romances were performed by Zara Dolukhanova. In 1958 he made his film debut in the film "The Youth of Our Fathers" .
In the 1960s, Tariverdiev was desperately in love with Lyudmila Maksakova. One night they were driving along Leningradsky Prospekt. Maksakova was driving. Suddenly, a drunk man jumped out of the bushes under the wheels. Tariverdiev told the traffic police that he was driving. He was sentenced to two years. Since the investigation also lasted exactly two years, he was released after the trial. Maksakova actually left him: during the last meeting she left with friends. After that, he decisively stopped the affair with her. This episode of his life is filmed in the film "Station for Two". In 1983 he met Vera Gorislavovna. They lived together for 13 years. In 1993-1996, he was the artistic director of the New Names Charity Program. Founder and President of the Guild of Cinema Composers of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia.
Author of four operas, including "Who are you" (for the theater B. Pokrovsky, 1966), "Count Cagliostro" 1983, "Expectation" 1985, four ballets (ballet "Girl and Death" (after M. Gorky, 1975), music for organ - three organ concertos, 10 chorales "Imitation of the Old Masters", a symphony for organ "Chernobyl" (1988), a piano trio, a cycle of pieces for piano "Mood", vocal cycles to verses by L. N. Martynov, A. A. Voznesensky, B. A. Akhmadulina, M. I. Tsvetaeva and many others. He wrote music for the films Seventeen Moments of Spring, Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!, My Younger Brother, The Deer King, The Man Follows the Sun, Goodbye, Boys! comedy "," Love ". In total - 132 films, more than 100 romances, instrumental concerts. His music is used in the film "Isaev" .
He died in the Sochi sanatorium "Actor", was buried in the Armenian cemetery in Moscow.
In 1997 the composer's book “I just live” was published.
