Born November 1, 1977, Ghent, Flanders, Belgium - Belgian film director, screenwriter and producer.
Studied at the Department of Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He graduated from the institute in 2000.
In 2004 his first film was released - "Steve and Sky" (Steve + Sky). Thanks to this work, Van Gruningen immediately became famous. Also in 2004, Steve and Sky won the Joseph Plateauprijs for Best Belgian Film. Until 2006, it was an important Belgian film award.
In 2007, Van Gruningen released Dagen Zonder Lief, about a group of friends whose lives change when one of them, who has been missing for several years, returns home again.
In 2008, Van Gruningen began filming "Flemish Still Life" (De helaasheid der dingen) based on the novel of the same name by the Belgian writer and poet Dmitry Verkhulst. The film was released in 2009 and in May of the same year was nominated for the Quinzaine des Realisateurs at the International Cannes Film Festival. There he won the Prix Art et Essai prize, which is awarded by an organization representing 3,000 independent cinemas around the world. Also at the 2009 Ghent Film Festival, Flemish Still Life won the Jo Ropcke Award 2009. This is the Flemish Film Awards, presented annually by the Belgian magazine Knack Focus.
On October 9, 2012 at the Ghent Film Festival, Felix Van Gruningen presented his fourth film, The Broken Circle Breakdown.
Open Circle was nominated for the 2014 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but the winner was the Italian film La grande bellezza, directed by Paolo Sorrentino.
