Gennady Vengerov was born on August 27, 1959 in the Belarusian city of Vitebsk, in a simple family. His father was an accountant, and his mother worked as a laboratory assistant at a medical institute. The future actor played his first role at the age of 6 in the extras of the film Three Fat Men. In 1978 he graduated from the Architecture and Construction College, and also completed the courses of announcers. He did not work in the construction profession for long, as he was offered the job of an announcer. Now his voice sounded on the regional radio of the city of Vitebsk. In 1980 he began his professional acting career at the Belarusian Academic Theater.
In 1983 he came from the army and became a student at the Moscow Art Theater School. Three years later, together with fellow student Mikhail Efremov, he organized the Sovremennik-2 theater, and since 1989 he performed at the Mayakovsky Academic Theater. In the same period, Vengerov graduated from the courses of announcers of the USSR State TV and Radio. His mentor was the legendary Yuri Levitan. Until 1994 he was an actor in the Dusseldorf Drama Theater, then until 2000 he worked in the Bochum theater.
