Elizabeth Marvel was born in Orange, California and studied acting at the Juilliard School. Her career has appeared in two dozen Broadway and Off-Broadway productions that have earned her four Obie Awards for Best Actress in Teresa Raken, Hedda Gubler, A Streetcar Named Desire and Unequal Marriage. In 2009, she was also nominated for a Drama Desk for her lead role in the Broadway play Fifty Words. In 2015, Marvel was cast as the lead in the Broadway adaptation of Misery, starring Bruce Willis.
On television, Marvel is best known for her role in the series East Park, where she starred from 2000 to 2004. She also starred in the closed-off series "Put Out the Lights" after one season in 2011 and has guest appearances on shows like In Sight, Sister Jackie, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Studio 30. In March 2013, Marvel landed the lead role in the CW's Eyes Closed pilot, which was not commissioned by the channel. In 2014, she joined Netflix's House of Cards as Heather Dunbar, the title's rival for the presidency.
On the big screen, Marvel acted as the narrator and performer of old Mattie in the 2010 film Iron Grip. She also appeared in Burn After Reading (2008), Love and Other Circumstances (2009), The Bourne Evolution (2012), Lincoln (2012) and Hyde Park on the Hudson (2012).
