Buck began his career as a sitcom writer before joining the cast of The Client Is Always Dead. He altogether wrote the scripts for seven episodes.
Buck served as a co-executive producer and writer for the second season of HBO's Rome in 2007. He wrote the scripts for two episodes of the series ("Those were the words of Mark Tullius Cicero" and "Death Mask") before the series was canceled.
He went on to work as a co-executive producer and writer for the second season of Showtime's Dexter in 2007. Buck was nominated for the US Writers Guild Award for Best Drama Series at a ceremony in February 2008 for his work on the second season of Dexter. He remained co-executive producer for the third season in 2008. Buck was again nominated for the same award for Best Drama Series in February 2009 for his work on the third season. He remained a writer and executive producer for the fourth season in 2009. He was nominated for a US Writers Guild Award for the third time in a row in February 2010 for his work on Season 4. In the sixth season of Dexter, after the previous showrunners left the series, Buck was promoted to this position.
In December 2015, Buck was hired as showrunner and executive producer on the Marvel and Netflix series Iron Fist. In December 2016, it was announced that he would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as showrunner and executive producer of the Inhuman series co-produced by Marvel Television, IMAX Corporation and ABC.
