Nicholas King Nolte was born on February 8, 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska, on the eastern border with Iowa. His father Frank was a German shareholder. Helen's mother was an incredibly beautiful woman from a talented family.

Nick attended West Side High School in Omaha, where he played on the football team. He later attended institutions such as Pasadena City College in Southern California, Arizona State University at Tempe (on a football scholarship), Eastern Arizona College and Phoenix College.

Nick Nolte gained national attention and critical acclaim for the first time for his filming in the television series Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), based on the best-selling novel by Irwin Shaw. Since then, he has appeared in more than 40 films, performing various genre roles.

The first film with Nick Nolte, in which he played the leading role, was released in 1977 under the title The Abyss. He is followed by War Dogs (1978) and North Dallas Forty (1979), based on the novel by Peter Ghent. In 1982, Nick Nolte solidifies his film career by playing 48 Hours in the film. The 1980s continued to release films starring Nick Nolte, including Under Fire (1983), Penniless in Beverly Hills (1986) with Richard Dreyfuss and Bette Midler, and New York Stories (1989) under directed by Martin Scorsese. In the 1990s, Nolte resumes work with Eddie Murphy in The Other 48 Hours. In 1991, Nolte received a long-awaited Oscar nomination, starring in the movie Lord of the Tides opposite Barbra Streisand. In the same year, he starred in Martin Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear, where he collaborated with Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange.
Nolte's work continued in the films Lorenzo's Oil (1992) with Susan Sarandon, Rock Mulholland (1996) and At Sunset (1997). In 1997, Nick earned another Academy Award nomination for his performance in the film Sorrow, but lost to Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful).
