However, initially acting was not on Waite's priority list, she knew from the age of seven that she wanted to become a writer for television and received all-round support in her pursuit from her single mother and grandmother. Parents divorced when she was three. Waite and her sister grew up in South Side, Chicago (South Side, Chicago), at twelve Waite enrolled in the local, mostly African-American Turner-Drew High School (Turner-Drew). She graduated from Evanston Township High School and received a degree in film and television arts from Columbia College Chicago in 2006, and praised the support of drama instructor Michael Fry.
Waite made primetime Emmy history by becoming the first black woman to win the Best Screenplay Comedy Series award for her work on The Master of All Trades. The episode "Thanksgiving," for which she won an Emmy, was based in part on her own experiences with her mother. She is also the creator of the Showtime TV series Chi.
