Born January 13, 1970, Chicago, USA - American producer, screenwriter, director and actress.
After graduating from high school, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Drama from Dartmouth College. She later went on to study screenwriting after moving to Los Angeles and enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree.
After graduating in the early nineties, Shonda Rhimes found herself unemployed as a screenwriter in Hollywood and, to make ends meet, worked in several jobs, including in a mental institution. After directing the award-winning documentary in 1995, she made her debut three years later as a writer, director and producer of the independent film Blossom and Veils.
In 2001 she wrote the screenplay for the movie Crossroads. Although the film was negatively received by critics, it was highly successful at the box office, grossing over $ 60 million. In 2004, she released The Princess Diaries 2: How To Become A Queen, which grossed over $ 130 million at the box office.
Shonda Rhimes' greatest success was the television series Grey's Anatomy, launched in early 2005. The show earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama in 2006, as well as Emmy nominations for Best Drama Series in 2006 and 2007 and an Emmy for Best Screenplay in 2006 and a number of other awards and nominations. The series achieved commercial success and received favorable reviews from critics.
In May 2007, Rimes was named to the Time 100 as one of the people who help shape the world. She has been nominated for an Emmy three times, and has received Producers Guild of America and Writers Guild of America awards and won five NAACP awards.
