March 21, 1903 - December 21, 1947 - American journalist, screenwriter and film producer best known for making social film noir in the mid-1940s. Hellinger initially made a name for himself as a New York theater critic and one of the first nationwide "Broadway Reviewers". Throughout the 1920s, Hellinger became "the epitome of the energetic and tough, hard drinking journalist", one of the leading Broadway observers, from 1923 on the Daily News in New York, and in 1929 he went to work for the Daily Mirror by William Hirst.
Moving to the cinema, Hellinger, as a screenwriter and producer, took part in the creation of a series of significant film noir, such as The Roaring Twenties (1939), The High Sierra (1941), The Assassins (1946), Brute Force (1947) and "Naked City" (1948) .
In 1947, Hellinger won the Edgar Award for Best Picture for Assassins (1946).
