March 11, 1887 - December 31, 1980 - American film director, actor, screenwriter, producer. Co-founder of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts.
Born in New York, grew up with his younger brother George, a future silent film actor. He began his career in 1909 as a theater actor, but soon came to the cinema. In 1914 he became an assistant to David Work Griffith and played his first major role in the film "The Life of General Villa". Walsh played John Wilkes Booth in Griffith's Birth of a Nation (1915). While filming In Old Arizona in 1928, he had a car accident and lost his right eye, after which he was never filmed again. Walsh wore an eye patch throughout his life. In his western "The Great Path" (1930), then little-known actor Marion Morrison played his first leading role, for whom Walsh coined the pseudonym John Wayne. In 1939, Walsh moved from Paramount Pictures to Warner Brothers, where over the next 10 years he directed his most famous films, including The Fate of a Soldier in America (1939), Black Team (Call of the Blood, 1940), High Sierra "(1941)," Delirium tremens "(1949). The contract with the studio expired in 1953. Walsh retired from cinema in 1964.
Walsh's first wife was silent film actress Miriam Cooper (1916-1926), who starred in several of his films. This was followed by marriages with Lauren Miller (1928-1947) and Mary Simpson (1947-1980).
