May 23, 1912 - December 6, 1989 - American film, theater and television actor best known for his roles in 1940s musical films and 1950s noir films.
Payne became a star in the late 1930s with Twentieth Century Fox musicals such as Ting Peng Ellie (1940), Sun Valley Serenade (1941), Spring in the Rockies (1942) and Hello , Frisco, hello ”(1943). Payne's most popular and favorite film was the Christmas tale Miracle on 34th Street (1947). In the second half of the 1940s, Payne abruptly changed his acting role, switching to the roles of tough and tough characters in action films and thrillers, in which he also achieved considerable success. Among his best works of the 1950s are film noir roles like Razor's Edge (1946), Criminal Route (1949), The Secrets of Kansas City (1952), 99 River Street (1953) and Shade of Scarlet "(1956), as well as in the western" Silver Vein "(1954).
