Joseph Losey - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, Director, Writer, Producer.

January 14, 1909, La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - June 22, 1984, London, UK - American and British film and theater director.

Studied in Germany with Bertold Brecht, then returned to the United States, where he worked on Broadway and Hollywood. In 1951, he fell victim to the McCarthy "witch hunt": he was accused of having links with the Communists and was included in the "Black List" of Hollywood. After that, Losey decided to leave for self-imposed exile in the UK.

At first, even in Great Britain, Losey was forced to work under the pseudonym Victor Henbury (The Sleeping Tiger, 1954) and Joseph Walton (A Close Stranger, 1956), as the actors feared that after working in Losey's films, they might have problems arise in Hollywood.

In the 1960s he worked with the playwright Harold Pinter. All of Losey's most successful films were made in collaboration with him, including The Servant (1963), Accident (1967) and The Mediator (1971). All of these films have received international awards including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Mediator.

Losey's last major production was Don Giovanni (1979), a film adaptation of Mozart's opera.
