Joseph Weedon was born on June 23, 1964 in Manhattan. Vidon is a third generation screenwriter. His father, Tom Whedon, was a television scriptwriter, and his grandfather John Whedon was a playwright, later writing sitcoms in the 1950s and 60s. The mother of Joseph Lee Stearns was a high school teacher and wrote novels in her spare time. In addition to Joseph, the family has two eldest sons - Matthew and Samuel. Whedon spent his childhood in New York, attending Riverdale High School, where his mother Lee Sturns taught. Joseph's parents divorced when he was 9 years old. Joseph stayed with his mother, who remarried and soon decided to take sabbatical. In 1980, the family moved to England, where Joseph attended the elite boys' school Winchester College in Hampshire. A year later, the parents returned to the United States, but Joseph continued his college studies for about two more years. Returning to the United States in 1982, Weedon continued his studies at the University of Wesleyan in Connecticut, graduating in 1987 and moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film production.
