July 29, 1892, Pittsburgh - March 5, 1984, Palm Springs - American theater and film actor, star of the films of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer company, filmed in the 1920s - early 1950s. Born in Pittsburgh, in 1907 he moved with his family to Kansas City. After graduating from high school in 1910, he left for New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which he graduated in 1912 and almost immediately made his Broadway debut. Then he worked for some time in small combined theater and variety troupes, but in 1920 he played the main negative role in the Broadway play "Spanish Love", and in 1922 - the role of Professor Moriarty in the silent film "Sherlock Holmes". His most famous role is considered to be the role of Nick Charles in the film "Slim Man" based on the novel by Dashil Hammett.
He stopped acting in 1954, including due to health conditions, died 30 years after that.
