February 16, 1903 - September 30, 1978 - American actor and radio presenter, most popular as the ventriloquist of his doll Charlie McCarthy. Bergen was born into a family of Swedish immigrants, and began to develop the art of ventriloquism as a child with his doll Charlie McCarthy, with which he became famous in the future. Initially, he performed as a vaudeville entertainer and later made a successful career in radio. His popularity as a ventriloquist on radio puzzled and astonished many critics, because listeners could not see either the mannequin or the artist's skill. At the height of its popularity in 1938, Bergen was awarded an honorary Oscar. The actor has also appeared on the big screen several times, both alone and with Charlie. In the 1950s, Bergen was a guest on many television programs, although he never had his own television project. In 1945, Bergen married actress Frances Westerman, who became the mother of their daughter, Candice Bergen, also an actress. Edgar Bergen died of kidney disease in 1978, just three days after the start of his farewell show in Las Vegas. In 1991, the actor was featured on a 29-cent U.S. commemorative stamp. Bergen has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry.
