July 27, 1900, Budapest, Hungary - June 4, 1959, Vienna, Austria - American film director, screenwriter, producer and actor of Hungarian descent.

He took up directing in the late 1920s, with the advent of sound films. During the First World War he served in the Austro-Hungarian army.

In 1958 he was a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

For his contribution to the cinema, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 6676 Hollywood Boulevard.
