August 13, 1904 Olate - April 21, 1999, Rancho Mirage - American actor and jazz musician. Born to Maud and Bert Henry Rogers in Olathe, Kansas. Studied at the University of Kansas. In the mid-1920s, he began acting in Hollywood films. He was a talented trombonist and played other musical instruments. Rogers performed with his jazz band on the radio. During World War II, he served in the US Navy as a flight instructor. Fame was brought to him by the 1927 film "Wings", where he played along with Clara Bow. The film received the award for Best Picture of the Year, which was first awarded this year.
Has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (No. 6135 on Hollywood Boulevard). Awarded the Gene Hersholt Award in 1986.
In 1937, Rogers became the third husband of silent film legend Mary Pickford, who was twelve years his senior. They lived in marriage for 42 years until Pickford's death in 1979. The couple did not have their own children, but they adopted two children - Roxanne (born 1944, adopted in 1944) and Ronald Charles (born 1937, adopted 1943). Rogers died at Rancho Mirage, California, in 1999 at the age of 94 of natural causes, and was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cathedral City, near Palm Springs.
